Apart from beautiful monuments, Krakow also has a unique cuisine. These are regional products, but also dishes that generally characterize Poland. Below you will find a small instruction on what you must try while in Krakow!

Obwarzanek / Bagel

The first thing you must try after arriving in Krakow is an Obwarzanek. We can compare it to a bagel. Often with various additives, such as sesame, poppy seeds, salt or cheese. You can actually buy it around every corner.

Bagel can be bought as you buy or with additions of your choice. It is a characteristic snack only for Krakow.  Its history dates back to the 14th century and its popularity does not go down – since then the cracovian bakers prepare over 200 thousand of these bagels every day.

Pierogi / Dumplings

Time for a dish that is a Polish tradition – Pierogi. You can eat them with anything you want: meat, fruit, spinach, cabbage and mushrooms. Dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms are a traditional dish in many homes during the Christmas season.

It is certainly a dish that is characteristic of Poland. Dumplings with meat or cabbage and mushrooms also taste good with czerwony barszcz (beetroot soup). It can also be eaten separately with potatoes or an egg.

Kremówka / Cream cake

One of the most popular cookies in Poland due to Pope John Paul II. A thick portion of vanilla cream is placed between two layers of coarse, crumbly dough and sprinkled with powdered sweet sugar.

Kiełbasa krakowska / Krakow sausage

There are many sausages in Poland. However, there is one that can be remembered for the rest of your life. It is the “Kiełbasa krakowska”. This thick, smoked version is so local it bears the name of the city itself.

Lean pork is seasoned with delicious coriander, garlic, pepper and a bit of allspice, all in a red-brown casing. It is the perfect addition to sandwiches.

Zapiekanka

The place where you can buy another typical Krakow dish is Plac Nowy, which is located in the Jewish Quarter. “Polish Pizza”, because this is what you can call this dish, it was hailed as the original Polish street food – in its purest form it is an oven-baked baguette with various additives that we can choose ourselves. It can be mushrooms with sticky cheese and ketchup.

We might as well add chicken or sausage to it. The building where we can buy this food is called “Okrąglak: and we can find several vendors competing with each other, serving various types of zapiekanka.

As you can see, there are several dishes in Krakow that you should definitely try. In addition, the city is full of all kinds of restaurants, where you can try not only local food, but dishes from all over Poland.
